Does any one know more about this relay of signals on other paths?

This isn’t unusual behavior. Text messaging was built on top of a protocol used for the phone to communicate with towers. They’re just continuing to do that. Here is an interesting talk on SIM cards. There is much more to them.

It’s probably not relevant at this time. Research can go in many different directions though so I don’t think a DIY board for SIM cards is out out of the question.

Yes on the idea of a SIM card module.

With the need for special hardware for SIM cards and Mag Stripes, perhaps a dedicated expansion port should be considered… A second USB port could work.
